Vanilla Type Values Beauty and Utility
and Never Sacrifices One for the Other
Beauty

Each typeface is designed after careful study of the best in class typefaces within the same type classification. (Vanilla Grotesque as an example) was born from careful study of Helvetica®, Neue Haas Grotesk, and Akzidenz Grotesk. After meticulously comparing and contrasting these iconic font giants, choices were made as to what parts of each typeface might be incorporated, reinterprited, or changed all together. The result is Vanilla Grotesque. A historically conscious type family that may (like the above mentioned typefaces) stand the test of time.

Beauty is not only a result of careful study and meticulous craft it is a tool that is rigorously applied in an effort to create sustainabilty. The aim is to create a typeface so beautiful you will reach for it time and time again reducing digital clutter and overcoming design trend turnover. (Both of which are all too common.)

Taking into account the entire history of type design is an important part of the Vanilla Type design process. This wide view leads to prioritizing design choices and motifs that have proven to stand the test or time.  Vanilla Typefaces aim to transcend short term trends through strict curation of references and well considered design choices.

Like a well constructed piece of furnature, Vanilla Typefaces are build to look beautiful, be used every day,  and age gracefully well into the future.
Utility

Utility is paramount when it comes to Vanilla Typefaces. Each typeface is designed to be the go-to typeface in its respective classification. Vanilla Type's first two releases Vanilla Grotesque and Vanilla Times (coming soon) are great examples of iterations on two of the most widely used type classifications. (Grotesque and Transitional) or as most people know them Helvitca® and Times New Roman.

Vanilla Typefaces differ from these typefaces not only aestheticly (to the well trianed {snobby} eye) but also in utility. Vanilla Type Super Families cover the widest range of widths and weights from extra condensed extra thin (we call it 110) to Extra Wide Ultra Bold (We call it 990) Each Vanilla Typeface also Comes in 3 subfamilies Display, Text, and Mono

The naming convention of Vanilla Typefaces also takes a more utilitarian approach than most type foundries. instead of confusing ambiguous naming conventions Vanilla Type uses a simple three digit number system. The first digit indicates width, the second weight, and the third italic angle. This way any designer can easily tell 451 is somewhat narrow is average weight, and is and is italic while 810 is quite wide, with a very thin weight and is upright.

Our licensing structure is also a reflection of our utilitarian ideology. All our licenses are perpetual, meaning you will never pay year to year to continue using a Vanilla Typeface. Vanilla Type also strives to keep licensing clear and simple offereing a few inclusive licensing options all based strictly on company size.
